The Comprehensive Ophthalmology service offers primary eye care including medical and surgical management for all types of conditions of the eye and surrounding structures – both routine and urgent. Our general evaluations screen and treat a wide range of ophthalmic conditions. Routine annual eye and vision exams, prescriptions for eyeglasses, and referrals for contact lens fittings are also offered. Patients who may require subspecialty ophthalmologic care are often referred after evaluation. The comprehensive diagnostic services provided include evaluation of visual acuity, refraction, slit lamp evaluation, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, fundus photography, and visual field testing.

Laura Varela - Ophthalmologist
Laura Varela, M.D., is a general ophthalmologist who is also specialized in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. She serves as a general ophthalmologist, taking care of patients of all ages, in the screening for acute and chronic eye disorders, as well as in their management with medication, laser therapy, intravitreal treatments and surgery. She also provides specialized care for children from premature neonates till school age, screening for retinopathy of prematurity, early refractive disorders, following visual development, and eye movement abnormalities. Dr. Varela embraces the principle that eye care forms a part of general well-being for the community and that patients need to be cared for with a holistic approach. She is fluent in Spanish, Papiamentu, English and can have a medical consultation in Dutch.

Michael Siban- Ophthalmologist
Michael Siban, MD, is a general ophthalmologist and treats most eye diseases (like cataract, pterygium and other anterior segment diseases). He is also specialized in Glaucoma for both adults and pediatric. He is a member of the Association of Caribbean Glaucoma Surgeons (ACGS), the European Glaucoma Society (EGS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He was an ophthalmologist at Academisch ziekenhuis Paramaribo from 2013 until September 2021 after which he joined the team at CMC. He has been on rotation as ophthalmologist at the St Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) since September 2018.
