Acidification of the blood (ketoacidosis)

In ketoacidosis, the blood ‘acidifies’. This happens when there is not enough insulin available to convert glucose in the blood into energy for the body.

The body then switches to the burning of fats that are stored in the body. This releases ketones that acidify the blood.
Because acidification of the blood is very dangerous, admission to the Intensive Care Unit may be necessary. Here, among other things, breathing, heart rhythm, blood pressure and important blood values are closely monitored. You may be given fluids and medications to help the ketoacidosis heal.
