CVA (stroke)

CVA is the abbreviation of Cerebro Vascular Accident, or an accident (accident) in the blood vessels (vascular) of the brain (cerebro). A CVA is also called a stroke and is a collective name for a cerebral infarction or TIA or a brain haemorrhage .

With a stroke, part of your brain receives little or no blood. As a result, the brain tissue does not receive enough oxygen and is damaged. That part will no longer work properly.

CVA chain care

The CVA chain care has been set up to improve treatment and care for people with a stroke. This is a network of care providers in the region who ensure that treatment and care are properly aligned in every phase of the disease process. A personal information folder has been compiled from the CVA chain of care . This will be handed out to you when you are admitted.

To research

It is not possible to tell from the symptoms of a stroke which form of a CVA is involved. More research is needed to make a diagnosis.

Blood draw
During a blood test, we take one or more tubes of blood with a hollow needle. This blood is then examined in the laboratory by an analyst.

CT scan general

In this examination, images are made of your body using a narrow beam of X-rays.

Cardiac video (electrocardiogram, EKG)

With a heart film (ECG) we measure the electrical activity of your heart muscle.
MRI and MRA examination
With the help of the MRI examination tendons, muscles, brain tissue, cartilage, intervertebral discs, organs or blood vessels can be visualized.

Duplex examination of the blood vessels in the neck

During a duplex examination of the blood vessels in your neck, the vascular technician uses sound waves to visualize the blood vessel. The degree of narrowing in your arteries is measured by measuring the speed of blood flow.

Treatments

The treatment of a stroke in the acute phase depends on the cause.
Immediately after admission to the neuro care unit, your treating neurologist will call in various therapists to guide you during the rehabilitation: the physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist. It is also possible that the dietician and/or social worker will guide you.

Dissolving clot in brain blood vessel (thrombolysis) in cerebral infarction. Prompt treatment of a stroke in the first few hours can prevent the stroke from having serious consequences. Carotid artery surgery for CVA or TIA (carotid end arterectomy – CEA). If you have a narrowed carotid artery, surgery may be needed.

Physiotherapy after a stroke (stroke)

If you have had a CVA (stroke), the physiotherapist in the hospital will examine how you are moving.

Speech therapy after a stroke (stroke)

After a stroke you may have speech-language disorders and/or swallowing disorders.
Occupational therapy after a stroke (stroke)
After a CVA (stroke), the occupational therapist will look for opportunities to carry out your daily activities together with you.

Medical Social Work after a CVA (stroke)

If you have suffered a CVA (stroke), the medical social worker in the hospital can offer you guidance.

Aftercare after a CVA (stroke)

After hospitalization, many stroke patients go home with discharge. Others go to a nursing home or rehabilitation center to continue their recovery and rehabilitation. Sometimes it is no longer possible to return to the home situation.
