592 emergency cases at CMC in one week

Willemstad, December 20th, 2022 – During the past week, 592 patients visited the Emergency room at Curaçao Medical Center (CMC), of which 97 (16.3%) were admitted to the hospital. This situation places an enormous pressure on the logistical processes. Hospital beds are occupied faster than anticipated, which can result into a longer than expected wait before scheduled patients’ beds become available.

There is an increase in the amount of traumas due to car accidents, but also patients arriving with heart problems. Next to this, what is placing a lot of pressure on the emergency department and causes additional delays in waiting time is the fact that a significant number of patients that come to the Emergency could have gone to their General Practitioners. These include cases such as diarrhea, fever or flu and children with asthma.

CMC asks the community to celebrate the Holidays responsibly and to contact the General Practitioner if your illness is not an emergency.
