CMC changes NICU Policy to Enhance Family-Centered Care

Willemstad, November 16th, 2023- Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) is pleased to announce a significant policy change within its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), aligning with the principles of Family-Centered Care. Effective November 17th, 2023, the NICU is adapting its visiting hours to empower parents to actively participate in their baby’s hospital journey.

In recognition of the crucial role parents play in the well-being and development of newborns in the NICU, the department has reevaluated its policies to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. Formerly governed by set visiting hours, the NICU will now welcome parents daily from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm, providing extended and flexible access to support families during their infants’ hospital stay.

This change marks a significant stride towards enhancing the quality of care provided at CMC, emphasizing the importance of familial involvement in the healing process. The decision to extend parent participation hours reflects CMC’s commitment to Family-Centered Care, recognizing the unique and integral role that parents play in the care and comfort of their newborns.

Dr. Naijla Duque, Pediatric specialist, Neonatalogist and Service Line Chief at Curaçao Medical Center, expressed enthusiasm for this progressive change, stating, “The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a critical space where the bond between parents and their newborns is paramount. By extending participation hours, we aim to provide families with the flexibility and support they need during what can be a challenging time.”

The NICU’s commitment to compassionate care and inclusivity is reflected in this policy change, reinforcing CMC’s dedication to the well-being of both infants and their families.
