Willemstad, December 1, 2025 – Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) cancer patients can now begin their treatment faster, with greater precision and reduced side effects, thanks to a major technological advancement in radiotherapy. On November 24th, CMC introduced a new state-of-the-art treatment planning platform powered by artificial intelligence (AI). With this CMC became the first hospital in the region to implement this technology, joining leading institutions such as the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and Northwest Hospital Group in Alkmaar. The system, Elekta One, is driven by the advanced MIM Software ecosystem.
For patients, the impact is direct and meaningful. The time between the CT scan and the start of radiotherapy is now considerably shortened, allowing treatment to begin sooner and reducing the anxiety that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis. “Our goal is simple,” said Lucien Zuiverloon, Radiotherapy Coordinator. “We want patients to start treatment sooner, with the confidence that their plan is as precise as possible.”
Whitney Coulor, Medical Physicist, explained the clinical benefit: “AI allows us to protect healthy organs much better even the smallest tissues such as lymph nodes and blood vessels. When we can see these structures more clearly, we can direct the equipment to deliver the lowest possible radiation dose to healthy areas. This means fewer side effects and a better quality of life for our patients.”
The Elekta One + MIM upgrade was installed by Elekta technicians in close collaboration with the IT Department, Department of Medical Physics, Medical Technology, and the Radiotherapy Team. This upgrade also prepares Curaçao for the next generation of linear accelerators and advanced radiotherapy techniques.
“For Curaçao to be among the first in Latin America and the Caribbean to adopt this technology demonstrates our commitment to world-class cancer care, right here at home,” added Zuiverloon. “Patients deserve the very best, and this upgrade helps us deliver it.”
