CMC: Medical Milestone for Maternal Safety

Willemstad, March 5, 2026 – Curaçao has reached an important milestone in maternal healthcare with the successful completion of the first locally organized mMOET course (Managing Medical & Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma), held at Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). CMC gynecologist Dr. Nurah Hammoud, whose leadership played a key role in bringing this internationally recognized training program to the island, coordinated the course.

Hosting the course at CMC strengthens the hospital’s readiness to respond to life-threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Healthcare specialists were able to complete this intensive emergency obstetric training locally, within the very hospital where obstetric emergencies are managed daily.

Obstetric emergencies such as severe hemorrhage, eclampsia, sepsis, and maternal cardiac arrest can escalate within minutes. The mMOET program is specifically designed to train physicians and acute care teams to recognize critical warning signs, make rapid decisions, and act effectively under pressure when both maternal and neonatal lives are at stake.

The course was delivered in collaboration with expert faculty from the Netherlands and local specialists, under the educational framework of the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG). Through realistic scenario-based simulations conducted at CMC, participants practiced managing complex obstetric emergencies in a controlled but highly demanding clinical environment.

Participants included gynecologists, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and acute care physicians from Curaçao and Aruba, along with three local obstetrics and gynecology nurses. Their participation reflects a shared commitment to strengthening maternal safety across the region.

The successful first edition marks a proactive investment in safer childbirth and improved maternal outcomes for Curaçao, reinforcing CMC’s commitment to delivering the highest standard of emergency obstetric care when every minute counts.
