CMC: Three children nearly drown in 1 week

Willemstad, September 10, 2025 – In the span of a single week, pediatricians at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) were confronted with three separate cases of children who nearly drowned. The incidents took place both in the sea and in swimming pools. The pediatricians stress that children without a swimming diploma should always wear water wings or a life vest, and that they must be under constant supervision when in or near water. They urge all parents/adults to keep an eye out on children at all times.

Near-drowning incidents can have serious and lasting effects on children, even if they survive. According to CMC’s experts, these consequences may include:

  • Delayed Symptoms: Children may appear fine immediately after the incident but develop complications hours or even days later.
  • Hypoxia: Lack of oxygen during submersion can lead to brain injury, affecting cognitive and motor skills.
  • Aspiration Pneumonia: Inhalation of water can cause lung infections, leading to respiratory distress.
  • Psychological Impact: Children may experience anxiety, fear of water, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the incident.
  • Long-Term Developmental Issues: Severe cases can result in permanent neurological damage, affecting learning and behavior.

These points are discussed in detail in the “Puntra un Eksperto” Podcast on Curacao Medical Center’s Facebook page with Dr. Duque’s episode of July 24th, 2025, where she emphasizes these possible consequences. Please take your time to watch and share the information with loved ones.
