Complete hearing tests are now possible at CMC

Willemstad, June 14th, 2022 – As of last week, complete hearing tests can be performed at Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). These tests are for adults with hearing loss, people with a constant beeping sound in their ears, children with the suspicion of hearing loss or speech impairment concerns, and even babies with suspected hearing loss can be measured.

Hearing loss can affect anyone and often progresses gradually, it can be difficult to notice until you experience symptoms. It has far-reaching effects on your health. The purpose of a test for hearing loss is not only to determine if there is a hearing loss, but also to find out how mild or severe it is. A thorough hearing test can help define the type of hearing loss, and whether it will respond best to medical treatment, such as surgery or hearing aids. When defining the hearing loss, the specialist examines in which part of the ear the hearing problem is situated; inner ear (cochlea) or middle ear (eardrum and ossicle chain).

Hearing tests are painless and non-invasive. At CMC it occurs in a quiet, soundproof cabin to keep out noises which might affect a patient’s hearing exam scores, such as air conditioner or office environment. Patients will be asked to wear headphones or soft earplugs with wires connected to an instrument called an audiometer that is used to conduct the test. The space is also equipped with specially placed speakers used for testing infants, small children or people who need to be tested while wearing hearing aids.
